Even in public restrooms!

Recently I stayed at The Curtis Hotel in downtown Denver. While exploring the hotel, I happened upon these restrooms. I loved how fun they were! The bright orange color, along with the phrases on the outside and inside of the stalls, gave this restroom something other public restrooms may be lacking—humor!

Colorado, Colorado Flood, Flood

Last week’s flooding in Colorado has made headlines far and wide — I even had a family member from France call to check in on us. Those of us who live in Colorado know that the devastation is more than a mere article or news clip or slideshow of images that you see one day only to be replaced by the next top news story the next. Here in Colorado we are in the process of picking up the pieces, cleaning up and rebuilding the homes, roadways and lives that have been affected by the rains and flooding. And it’s something you can help with, too — no matter where you are. If you have time and manpower or simply a few dollars to donate, below are a few links for how to provide the much needed assistance now that the rain has subsided:

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it’s a place to start. The great state of CO thanks you for your help!

Beauty

If you foolishly ignore beauty, you’ll soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you wisely invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.  —Frank Lloyd Wright

Africa, Botswana, Kalahari Desert, Weaver Bird

The female Weaver bird in Botswana requires her mate to build the perfect home for her or she will reject it… sometimes dozens of times until she is happy!

Weaver Bird Home

The homes of the indigenous San People of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana have similar qualities to those of the Weaver Bird but unlike the birds, the female Sans are the main gatherers of their people and take on most of the task of home-building so are not likely to reject the end result. Simple, beautiful and functional, both human and bird have crafted homes from materials gathered from their environments; vernacular architecture at its best.

The gallery below contains images of a hut that is partially constructed, showing the intricate details, texture and rhythm of the materials used to build the home. Insulating walls are made with horizontal branches sandwiched between a vertical assembly of branches. The structural members of the roof are assembled in a cylindrical pattern to soon hold the thatch still being collected and dried.
